Emilie is a typical Asthma patient. Many young women suffer from Asthma. Around 50% of Asthma patients are not receiving correct care.

Because Emilie’s Asthma was not appropriately treated, she missed activities and lost school days due to illness. Emilie was diagnosed with Asthma as a child and was treated with corticosteroids. When she stopped feeling the symptoms associated with Asthma for a longer period of time, she discontinued the medication.

However, as a teenager she experienced other symptoms – including fatigue and frequent airway infections. Only when her airway symptoms got very severe, did she consult a doctor, who among other things used an exhaled nitic oxide measurement to ascertain that there was a serious inflammation in her lungs. She had a severe case of untreated Asthma, which was the root cause to many of the problems she had experienced.

Asthma symptoms are often diffuse. It can be quite difficult for patients to feel that they have an Asthma that requires treatment. This often leads to non-compliance with medication. With the new SpiroFriend Asthma Device, Asthma patients can self-monitor on a daily basis using analysis that is currently only available for diagnostics, and oftentimes only available in specialized clinics. The objective indicator supplements the patient’s own impressions on a daily basis and leads to a better understanding of the patient’s needs as they evolve.

The access to objective indicators of inflammation can also help and reassure parents as they manage their children’s Asthma.  Much like measuring temperature it is not a diagnostic, but the Asthma device measures objective indicators that can help guide the decisions of a parent.

Furthermore, self-measurement can also help early identification of cases, where the prescribed medication does not have an effect, and where the diagnostics or medication need revision.
